JOURNALISM VS SOCIAL MEDIA

I'M not one to comment on what’s happening in the media industry. This time, however, I’m going to make an exception for it is not often you become a media student and you don’t have sentiments about what is happening within the industry.  I decided to start this blog with a very interesting topic that makes me worry and at the same time excites  me about the beauty of technology (social media).

I didn’t know much about social media, up until I decided to study Public Relations and Communication and met up with my amazing media lecturer. I then realised one thing, that every morning we  are waken up by a hot cup of coffee and  news distributed on social media. And the ideal news breaker is twitter. It is the ultimate journalist challenge that people document news on social network before published.

Journalists used to use pen and papers, cameras to film events on news. Today things have changed. I personally listen, watch and read news on my cell phone.I no longer wait for 7oclock news to be documented.

Twitter, Facebook and Instagram had really become fantastic platforms to use as source of news. I’ve gained, spot and shared news on these phenomenal platform.

I think the beauty of social media is that people can now engage on topics. I’ve seen newsfeed of Oscar’s trial, citizen journalist reporting on the recent tremor experienced.

I believe that social media is a significant tool for the freedom of the press and It really enlarges the number of people who can contribute information. Let’s not get carried away and get to the topic. Do you think we still need journalist in the age of social media? This is open for discussion.

  1. I'm an avid user of social media. I think it has revolutionised the media industry so much. We don't just consume news now, but we are also news providers and media houses in our own right. That is real power!

  2. I still believe that journalist are needed. As much as we get news on social media we shouldn't forget the social media may be field with a lot of opinions as compared to what you read in the newspaper and what you see on the primetime news.

  6. I agree with kuhle, I mean the good old fashion hard copy still does a great job for me as it is credible and reliable as journalists are trained to gather relevant information unlike scrolling down your timeline to get fresh news.

  9. I personally think that social media is but yet a platform for journalism to spread its wings and do great. Journalism has evolved with the times, we are now in the social media era and journalism has taken advantage of that, so yes, journalism is still relevant.

  12. I love how receive news-feeds fast and firsthand from our friends and social communities, but since we are just citizen journalists it is highly valuable that we still rely on our traditional media for credibility and surety reasons. i don't really believe that social media can drive out traditional media

  16. When it comes to social media we have no watch dogs so it means we are able to speak our minds out. Journalists are just there to give us the facts.
